Catherine Cossey ALCM BA(hons) CertPPTC MA

Catherine is a passionate educator with over 20 years of experience as a piano teacher and pre-school music teacher. In 2010 she graduated from EPTA’s Certificate of Practical Piano Teaching with distinction, and in 2016 she was awarded a Masters with Distinction in Instrumental Teaching from the University of Reading. Catherine is passionate about piano teaching and believes that when teachers work in community they can achieve so much more than when they work in isolation. This belief led to her founding The Piano School in 2012. Through The Piano School Catherine is involved in developing innovative curriculum and resources that enhance students’ experience of music and allow them to reach their full musical potential.

Catherine loves working with students of all ages and abilities and has a particular passion for teaching young beginners. As well as teaching individual piano lessons, she teaches many of the Musical Discoveries classes for 4-5 year olds which put her years of pre-school music teaching to good use! With a firm belief that children learn best when they are enjoying themselves, she loves ensuring her lessons are full of fun, creativity and laughter!

Alongside her work at The Piano School, Catherine is involved in training instrumental teachers in other contexts. She previously worked as an Internal Assessor and Director of Assessment for the Certificate of Music Educators. Since 2017, she has been a module leader at Nexus ICA, lecturing on Instrumental Teaching and Pedagogy at Undergraduate and Masters levels. She also offers mentoring services to independent piano teachers in the West Midlands.

Catherine lives in Coventry with her husband Matt, also a pianist and piano teacher, and their two sons. She is a member of EPTA (UK) and The Curious Piano Teachers.

  • “My daughter’s teacher is delightful and patient, and the lessons are both engaging and at an appropriate level. The fact that CCPT emphasises engaging the student regardless of their level of ability makes it the perfect environment to learn in!”

  • “CCPT offers such a fun way to learn about music. The children sing, dance and play different instruments all in a relaxed and friendly environment. After the lessons none of the children are in a rush to go home!”
